What Is Berlengas?

Berlenga Grande sits ten miles into the Atlantic from the fishing harbor at Peniche. Most days, the crossing is brisk and salty, tossing spray over the bow before the pink granite bluffs rise out of the ocean. The archipelago has been a nature reserve since 1981, home to breeding colonies of Cory's shearwaters, yellow-legged gulls, and rare coastal plants that cling to windswept gullies.

The main draw on foot is the Fort of São João Baptista. Built on a separate sea rock and joined to the island by narrow stone arches, it looks like an extension of the cliff itself. Turquoise water pools inside the arches, clean enough to count the sea urchins three fathoms down.

You cannot simply show up unannounced in high season. Portugal's conservation institute caps visitors to protect the nesting grounds, so you need an official entry permit alongside your ferry ticket. Facilities on the island are sparse, consisting of a single restaurant, a few small guesthouses, and steep walking trails, which keeps the place feeling remote even during summer weekends.

★★★★★

The bridge over to São João Baptista is unbelievable. Snorkeling in the cove beneath the fort felt like swimming in an aquarium, though the water was freezing.

Matteo V., Italy
★★★★

The crossing was very bumpy on the rib boat, so take seasickness pills. Once there, walking the high trail past thousands of nesting gulls was unforgettable.

Claire B., France
★★★★★

Wild and completely untamed. We kayaked through the elephant cave and had espresso at the harbor shack before the afternoon ferry arrived.

Tomasz K., Poland
★★★★★

Get the earliest boat out of Peniche. Having the fortress path to yourself at 10:30 AM before the larger groups land makes the early alarm worth it.

Sarah H., United Kingdom

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about berlengas.

A standard round-trip boat ticket costs around €22 to €28, depending on the boat style. You must also pay the mandatory €3 environmental fee via the Berlenga Pass online system before boarding.

Yes. Portuguese authorities restrict visitor counts to 550 individuals at any given time. During July, August, and holiday weekends, slots sell out days ahead.

Berlengas is much smaller, drier, and far more austere. It is a day-trip destination off the mainland with pink rocks and seabirds, not a lush island with mountain roads and towns.

Four to five hours on Berlenga Grande is sufficient to walk the trails to the fort, take a quick swim at the main cove, and join a short cave boat tour.

The Atlantic stretch between Peniche and the island frequently has heavy rolling swells. If you are prone to motion sickness, take medication an hour before stepping onto the boat, especially on the smaller speedboats.

No. Domestic pets are banned on the island to protect the resident and migratory bird populations, except for registered service animals.

There is one small restaurant near the harbor and a tiny snack bar, but supplies are limited and service is slow during peak boat arrival times. Carrying two liters of water and your own lunch is sensible.

Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro has clear, calm water tucked between granite walls. The open Atlantic waters around the fortress are brisk, often hovering around 16°C, but offer exceptional visibility for snorkeling.
